When you change a page's URL or delete a page, it's helpful to redirect your visitors to a page that works. This prevents your visitors from landing on a 404 page and leaving your site.

What is a redirect?

A redirect is a forwarding from one page to another. You use this when you have deleted a page, no longer use a page, or have changed the page URL.

A redirect prevents visitors from landing on a 404 page and leaving your website. An additional benefit is that a redirect is good for your SEO (visibility in Google) πŸ”.

How do I create a redirect?

Go to Pages > Redirects and click the button to add a redirect.

The source is the "from" page: this page should redirect to the target. First, enter the slug of the page you want to redirect to. The slug is the part after the forward slash (/) in the URL.

Second, enter the full URL of the page you want to redirect to. This must be an existing page. Click Add to create the redirect.

Your redirect will be active immediately. Visitors who visit the source page will automatically be redirected to the target page.

Example:

I've changed the URL of my page, and I want visitors with the old URL to be redirected to the new one.

My old URL is plugandpay.com/rates, and the new URL is plugandpay.com/pricing.

I'm entering rates as the source and https://plugandpay.com/pricing as the target.

ℹ️ Want to redirect to your homepage? Just enter your Plug&Pay domain name.

Edit or delete redirects

You can edit or delete a redirect via the same overview.

Click the three dots next to your redirect to:

  • deactivate your redirect. Your redirect will stay in the overview, but will no longer be executed.

  • edit your redirect. Change the slug or URL of your redirect.

  • delete your redirect. The redirect will disappear from the overview and will no longer be active.

Statuses

Redirects can have three statuses: Active, Inactive, and Broken.

  • An active redirect redirects your source page to the target page.

  • An inactive redirect does nothing, but is still visible in the overview. A redirect only becomes inactive when you deactivate it.

  • A broken redirect is active, but doesn't function properly.

Broken redirects

A broken redirect doesn't correctly send visitors to the specified page. This can happen when:

  • your target page also has a redirect set up.

  • your target page doesn't exist and returns a 404 error.

  • your target page requires authentication (403 error).

By hovering your cursor over the message, you can find the reason for the broken redirect and fix it:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

My redirect is not working, how is this possible?

Check if the status is Active. If your redirect is inactive, enable it.

Can I automatically create a redirect?

This isn't possible. When you delete a page or change the slug, it's important to create a redirect for the old page.

Will my pages be automatically redirected when I set up my own domain name?

When you switch from our Plug&Pay subdomain to your own domain, all pages will automatically be redirected to your own domain!

Can I set up a redirect to another domain name/website?

Yes, that's possible. Your source page is always within your Plug&Pay site, but your target page can go to any website!

Can I redirect my whole domain?

It's not possible to redirect your entire Plug&Pay domain to another domain name. If you use your own domain name, you can often set up a domain redirect with your domain provider.
