Sometimes you want to give a few customers a discount without changing the price of the checkout. Or you want to run a promotion where people get a discount via a discount code!
In that case you can create a discount code. When customers enter this discount via your checkout, they will receive a discounted price.
Discount codes are part of Plug&Pay Premium & Ultimate. Are you using Plug&Pay Lite? Upgrade to Premium or Ultimate to use this feature.
Creating a discount code
To create a discount code, go to Tools > Discount codes in Plug&Pay and click Add first discount code.
Once you have done that, you will see this screen:
We will explain what you can set up in each section!
Options
First, give the discount code a name so you can easily recognise the code.
Under Type, you specify what kind of discount you want to give with this discount code. You can choose between percentage, fixed amount, or a free product.
Under Discount, you then specify how much discount you want to give exactly and whether it may be applied to the entire order or to each item.
Entire order: the discount is applied to the total amount in the shopping cart.
Each item: the discount is applied to every item in the shopping cart, including all order bumps.
Next to this you will see the Recurring option. If you select 'Yes' here, the discount will be applied at every order within the subscription or instalment payment for subscriptions and instalment payments. If you leave the option set to 'No', the discount from the discount code will only apply to the first order.
Finally, you can fill in the Discount code. Here you enter what the actual discount code should be. If you enter WINTERSALE here, customers will have to enter WINTERSALE as the discount code on the checkout.
You can also have a discount code generated for you - this may be a bit more secure ;-)
Conditions
Under Conditions you can set what an order must meet before the discount code works. You can specify whether the discount code works for all products or for one product. It is not possible to activate the discount code for a selection of products.
You can also enter a minimum amount. Only when customers spend more than that amount does the discount code work.
Restrictions
You can also set a number of Restrictions for your discount code. For example, you can set a maximum number of times the discount code may be used in total. You can also specify that the discount code may only be used once per email address.
Finally, you can enter a start date and an end date. The discount code becomes active on the start date and after the end date the discount code can no longer be used.
Activating the discount code on the checkout
For customers to use the discount code, they need to be able to enter it on the checkout. In the settings of the checkout, enable Content > Fields > Order > Allow discount codes. This field must be ticked!
The checkout will then show the option to enter a discount code.
Automatically filling in a discount code in the URL
Sometimes you don't want the discount code option to be visible on the checkout. Other customers might see that a discount is possibly available and immediately start looking for one! But at the same time, you may still want to give a group of customers a discount using a discount code.
You can have the discount code applied automatically! You do this by modifying the URL of the checkout. You add ?discount_code= after the URL followed by the code for the discount code.
The URL of my checkout is, for example:
My discount code is WINTERSALE2
The direct URL with this discount already applied is:
I can send that link to customers and the discount from my discount code will already be applied directly! On the checkout I can then hide the discount code field.
