If you want to give a few customers a discount without changing the price of the product, or want to run a promotion, you can offer a discount code. When customers enter the discount via a checkout or receive a checkout URL with a discount code in it, they can purchase the product at a discounted price.
This article covers how to offer such a discount code for subscriptions and instalment orders.
Don't know how to create such a code yet? I recommend reading the following article first.
Offering a discount code for subscriptions and instalments.
When creating a discount code, you have the option under the Options settings to make a discount code recurring. You do this by choosing 'Yes' for this option. The discount will be applied at every order within the subscription or instalment payment.
If you do not choose 'Yes' for Recurring, the discount from the discount code will only apply to the first order.
The created discount code can be offered to customers so they can apply it themselves in the checkout, or you can include the discount code in the URL of the checkout.
Applying a discount to an existing subscription and instalment payment.
If you want to apply a discount to an existing subscription or instalment payment, that is possible - but not by setting a discount code. You can adjust the price of the order within a subscription or instalment payment. You adjust the price by opening the order via the subscriptions or instalment payments tab (depending on the type of product).
You will then see the complete details of the order including the product and price under the Subscription content. You can adjust the product and price via the pencil icon at Subscription.
Once you click the button, the settings for the product and price will open. You can apply a discount via the fields next to Discount as an action discount, promo discount, or for multiple quantities of the product, a volume discount. All discounts can be applied as an amount. The volume discount is an amount per product. If you have two products in the subscription, someone receives the discount x2.
An action discount is processed in the pricing settings of the subscription, and a promo discount is via a discount code. If you manually change the price and add a discount, it does not matter in principle which one you use.
Finally, it is important to note that a discount manually applied to a subscription or instalment order is recurring. So if you only want to offer the discount for the first period, you will need to adjust the price again before the next payment.
Don't forget to save your changes using the Save button!
