Adding custom fields

Ask for extra information from your customer on the checkout

Written by Frederieke Slinger

In this article, you'll read how to add extra fields to a product, so you can ask your customer for extra information on the checkout. Useful when, for example:

  • you're organising an event that runs over several days;

  • you're selling clothing in different sizes;

  • you offer a product in multiple colours.

Custom fields are available from Plug&Pay Premium. Are you on Plug&Pay Lite? Upgrade to Premium or Ultimate to use this feature.

Creating custom fields

You create custom fields on the product itself. Go to Products, open the product you want and click the Custom fields tab.

You can add up to 10 custom fields to a product.

Click Add field. You then choose whether to start from a template or design the field yourself.

If you go with a template, there are five options to choose from, each with a short explanation:

  • Instagram

  • Colour

  • Size

  • Date

  • Personal message

If you choose Design your own field, you go straight into the settings. Here you set the following:

  • Name: give the field a name that's recognisable to you.

  • Field type: pick the type that matches the information you want to collect: text, text paragraph, dropdown, checkbox, radio button, numeric or email address.

  • Title: the name your customer sees on the checkout and the invoice.

  • Options: for choice fields such as a dropdown or radio button, this is where you set the available options.

  • Stock: choose whether you want to keep track of stock.

  • Max. number of characters: the maximum number of characters that can be entered.

  • Required: tick this if the customer has to fill in the field.

Once everything looks right, click Add. The field then appears in your list of custom fields.

💡 Ask for as little information as possible on your checkout. Every extra question gives a customer a reason to drop out. Only use custom fields when you actually need the information.

❗ Custom fields aren't shown when the product is added to the checkout as an order bump.

Managing stock

Keeping track of stock through a custom field? You're no longer limited to managing it inside the field itself. You can now manage the stock from the general tab of the product as well.

Enabling or disabling fields per checkout

Custom fields are automatically added to your checkout. Don't want to show a field on a specific checkout? Go to Pages > Checkouts, open the checkout you want and head to Content > Fields. Untick the custom field there.

Custom fields in exports, Zapier and webhooks

You use custom fields outside the checkout too:

  • In an export, you'll find the filled-in fields in an extra column called custom_fields, at the very end.

  • In Zapier and webhooks, all fields are available as customfield_1 through customfield_10.

Watch out for the field order. You can drag custom fields around to reorder them, and that order carries over to the checkout. But it doesn't carry over to exports, Zapier or webhooks: there, the order stays based on the date each field was created. That means customfield_4 in Zapier can have a different label and a different value than the fourth field on your checkout.
