Provide downloads after an order

How to make downloads available to your customers

Written by Bryan Schoenmaker

If you sell a digital product, such as an e-book or spreadsheet, you want to provide this product automatically after an order is placed.

In this article you find the four different ways in which you can share a digital file with your customers.

Upload a file to the Media Library

You must first add the file you want to offer to your media library.

Go to Media, click Add File, and upload your file(s).

ℹ️ The upload limit is 50MB per file

1. Order summary as download page

The most common option is to use the order summary page directly as a download page as well. This page is displayed after the customer has completed payment on the checkout.

For the product you are selling, you can add up to five downloads under the Media tab.

Default order summary page

If you use the default order summary page, your added downloads will be displayed here. Your customer will only see this page once after checking out.

2. Landing page as download page

The second option is to create a landing page yourself and link it to your checkout. Your customer lands on this page after payment.

Choose one of our confirmation page templates to get started.

📂 Link file to page

Your file can be downloaded through a button. Add a button to your landing page or select an existing button. You can configure the button in the left menu.

Under Type, choose Download file. Select your file from the Media Library and add it. Save and publish your page.

The linked file can now be downloaded on this landing page. As a final step, you need to link this page to your checkout.

🔗 Link landing page to checkout

To link this landing page to the checkout, navigate to your relevant checkout. Under After order go to select Custom URL. Paste the URL of your landing page and click Save.

ℹ️ You can find the URL of your landing page by viewing the live version.
The URL is in your browser's search bar.

3. Share file via email

You can also choose to link the product to your email marketing provider.

With Plug&Pay, we offer a direct integration for ActiveCampaign.
For other email software, you must use Zapier.

🎁 Freebie

If you offer a freebie through a form on your opt-in page, Plug&Pay can automatically send an email with the file attached. That way, you don't need external email software at all!

4. Share file via external host

Do you use a different type of file, or are the files larger than 50MB? Then you can use an external host. In my example, I use Google Drive.

Upload your files to Google Drive.

Next, you set it so that anyone with the link can view the file, and copy the link.

You will add this link to your order summary, confirmation page, or email.

When someone clicks on the link, they will be redirected to your external host to download the file.

❗️Customers can share this link with other people and distribute your product in this way without being paid for it
