Linking a product to ActiveCampaign

Set up ActiveCampaign rules for your Plug&Pay product

Written by Bryan Schoenmaker

In this article, you'll read how to link a product in Plug&Pay to ActiveCampaign. You do this by creating one or more rules on the product. Each rule consists of a trigger (when something should happen) and an action in ActiveCampaign (what should happen). This way, you automatically add a buyer to a list, apply a tag or start an automation, at the exact moment you want.

ℹ️ Don't have a connection with ActiveCampaign yet? You can read about that in this article.

Setting up rules for a product

Go to Products and open the product you want to link. Click the Rules tab and then the Add rule button.

Fill in the following details in the pop-up:

  • Name: give the rule a name that's recognisable to you.

  • Trigger: choose the moment at which the rule should fire. See below which triggers you can choose for a product.

  • Action: choose ActiveCampaign.

  • Choose an action: choose what should happen in ActiveCampaign. See the overview of actions below.

Click Create rule to save the rule. It then appears in the overview and is active straight away. You can create multiple rules for a product.

ℹ️ The lists, tags, fields and automations you choose in an action must already exist in ActiveCampaign. Create them there first if they don't exist yet.

Available triggers

For a product, you can choose from these triggers:

  • Invoice created: an invoice has been created for this product.

  • Order paid: the buyer has paid for the order of this product.

  • Subscription cancelled: the customer has cancelled the subscription. Access often continues until the end of the period.

  • Subscription changed: an active subscription has been adjusted, for example from monthly to annual.

  • Subscription ended: the subscription has stopped and is no longer active.

  • Subscription created: a subscription for this product has been started.

Available actions

Once you've chosen ActiveCampaign as the integration type, you can set one of these actions:

  • Subscribe to list: add the contact to a list.

  • Unsubscribe from list: remove the contact from a list.

  • Add tag: apply a tag to the contact.

  • Remove tag: remove a tag from the contact.

  • Set field: fill in a field that you've created in ActiveCampaign.

  • Add automation: add the contact directly to an automation.

  • Remove automation: remove the contact from an automation.

Practical examples

Below are a few examples of rules you can set for a product, to give you an idea of what's possible.

Buyer straight into your welcome sequence

Trigger Order paid, action Add automation. As soon as someone buys your product, your onboarding or welcome emails start automatically, with things like the download, login details or first steps.

Segmenting buyers with a tag

Trigger Order paid, action Add tag with something like "PURCHASED: photography course". This way, in ActiveCampaign you know exactly who has which product, and you can later send a targeted follow-up offer to just that group.

Placing the customer on a customer list

Trigger Order paid, action Subscribe to list with your general customer list. Useful if you want to keep one list of everyone who has bought something from you.

Removing cancellers from your mailings

Trigger Subscription cancelled, action Unsubscribe from list. This way, someone who cancels no longer receives emails about this subscription. Want to win them back? Choose Add automation and start a win-back sequence.

Revoking access at the end of a subscription

Trigger Subscription ended, action Remove tag to remove the tag that indicates access or active status. This keeps your segmentation in ActiveCampaign clean and stops your automation from mailing former members.

💡 Tip: combine multiple rules on one product. For example, add a tag on purchase and remove that same tag when the subscription ends. That way, your records in ActiveCampaign stay accurate.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I set multiple rules on one product?

Yes. You can add as many rules as you want, each with its own trigger and action. They all appear in the overview on the Integrations tab.

Why don't I see my list, tag or automation in the list?

It has to exist in ActiveCampaign first. Create it there and reopen the rule.

What happens if the contact doesn't yet exist in ActiveCampaign?

The contact is then automatically created based on the email address, after which the action is carried out.

Can I see somewhere whether the rules have been executed?

Yes. Open the order for the product and navigate to the History block. Open the Integrations tab to view all executed rules.
